You can’t begin to inspire others if you are not inspired yourself. In essence, you are a dry well and as they say, you can’t give what you don’t have. So my question to you today is:
Who or what inspires you?
Is there someone who by their example or influence in your life makes you want to be a better person? Is there a place that when you are there allows you to connect to your deepest dreams and desires?
People draw inspiration from an unlimited number of sources. For me, nature has always been a tremendous source of inspiration. The first time I saw Yosemite Valley I spontaneously wept at the overwhelming beauty of it. And since I was young, time spent at the end of the pier at my family’s cabin on Lake Wisconsin looking out over the water has centered me and allowed me to tap into my inner voice again.
You can also be uplifted by people in your life, or even ones you don’t personally know. I have met many parents who say having a baby brought out in them a deep desire to be a better person for their child. Rudy Giuliani, who I’ve had the pleasure to see speak several times now, inspires me to be a better leader in times of crisis. And countless others have raised my spirits just by hearing the story of their life. As you experience more inspiration, creativity, gratitude, wonder and excitement, it can’t help but spill over into all areas of your life, influencing everyone around you.
Inspiring leaders don’t set out with the intention of being inspiring, it happens because of who they are. They connect with people’s hearts, create opportunities to grow their people, frequently recognize and reward the contributions of others, and cast a vision of a better future. By being an exceptional leader, you will inspire others by your example. You may never know the full impact you have, but then again, most inspirational leaders don’t worry about the recognition. They’re too busy serving others.
I’d love to hear about what inspires you. Please comment.
