“What you are speaks so loudly I cannot hear what you say.”
Ralph Waldo Emerson
This is one of my favorite quotes. I think it gets right to the heart of what truly differentiates exceptional leaders fromaverage leaders. Great leaders understand that people really don’t care what you say; the truth lies in your actions.
I’m sure you can think of a leader right now who does not walk their talk. Because their words and actions are not in alignment, over time they will lose the respect and trust of their people. Don’t let this happen to you.
Commit today to becoming a person who practices what they preach. If you tell your team that it is important that they are on time…then you be on time. If you say that you will do something for a team member…then do it. Hold yourself to a higher standard of performance than anyone else does. Model the behavior that you want to see and others will follow.
Don’t worry about whether or not people are watching what you are doing. The reality is ….they’re always watching. Every day, by your action or inaction, you are telling your team who you are, your values and your priorities.
So think about it, what do your actions say about you?
